StyleList 7: Pretty Spring Blouses

Filed under:

If there is one item of clothing I would recommend every woman have in her wardrobe, it's a simple silk blouse.

Equipment, a brand best known for having the quintessential silk shirt, was launched in 1975 by Christian Restoin (long-time boyfriend to former French Vogue editor Carine Restoin-Roitfeld). This year, the line has expanded to include anything from soft pastels to
tropical Hawaiian prints.

This versatile spring staple can be worn with wide leg trousers to work, a pair of leather shorts in the evening, or your favorite jeans on the weekend. You could also take a style cue from the likes of Alexa Chung and pair it with the most unlikely of all options, jean shorts.

From boardroom to cocktails, this is one summertime essential that has you covered.

Pictured: 1. Carven, cape-sleeve blouse, $465, net-a-porter.com; 2. Theory, deblin stretch-silk blouse, $255, net-a-porter.com; 3. Gap, draped tie-hem blouse, $59.95, gap.com; 4. Equipment, silk oversized shirt, $218, intermixonline.com; 5. Goldie, lace trim blouse w/ detachable lace scarf, $112.96, asos.com; 6., Proenza Schouler, silk pattern pleat blouse, $649, mytheresa.com; 7. TBA, contrast panel top, $249.99, asos.com

Quick Fixes for Common Wardrobe Malfunctions

0

Wardrobe malfunctions happen to the best of us and more often than not, they occur at the most inopportune time (ex. when you're running late or while on a date.). Luckily there are quick fixes and handy inventions that'll have you looking polished in no time. I put together a few common wardrobe malfunction scenarios below where you can envision yourself using these products. The best thing is that they are all under $20 and many can be stowed away in your purse. You can't get any easier than that.

Wardrobe Malfunction: Let's say that you've recently conquered the battle of the bulge (good for you!) but your pants don't fit in the waist anymore. Or, maybe you want to wear a chic, form-fitting shirt over your pants but your bulky belt buckle is showing. What's a girl to do?
Invisibelt
Inexpensive & Quick Fix: Try the Invisibelt ($19.95). It's a belt without an actual belt buckle. Thanks to its flat clasp design, this "No Buckle Belt" lets women wear fitted tops over pants or skirts with no trace of an unsightly belt buckle detected.

___________________________________________________________________________

Wardrobe Malfunction: There are a ton of different deodorants that are invisible solids that promise to leave 'no white residue' behind. Unfortunately you try a new deodorant brand and halfway through your dinner date, you discover that it has left a mess on your LBD!
Gal PalInexpensive & Quick Fix: Try Gal Pal ($10.75). If you love wearing an LBD but hate the deodorant stains that are often left behind after wearing it, the Gal Pal Pad may become a welcoming addition to your purse. They are hand-held pads that you can use to buff away the white marks (think Magic Eraser). They're quick, easy and re-usable. Three cheers for removing the deodorant marks without having to remove your clothes!

__________________________________________________________________________

Wardrobe Malfunction: It's been a long day at the office and you're relaxing at home. All of a sudden, you spill your glass of wine on your favorite blouse. Yikes! You'd better act fact before that leaves a stain.
Tide To GoInexpensive & Quick Fix: Try applying Tide To Go ($4). These convenient, portable pens help eliminate food and drink stains while you're on-the-go. Slip one in your purse for emergencies.

_________________________________________________________________________

Wardrobe Malfunction: Uh Oh. You're late for work. While running out the door, you notice that your favorite sling back pumps are scuffed. Plus, there's no time to change!
Foot PetalsInexpensive & Quick Fix: Try the Foot Petals ($12.95). They are similar to Tide To Go in that they are like a pen but they are available in black and brown -- specifically made for removing stubborn scuff marks.

__________________________________________________________________________
Wardrobe Malfunction: It's a hot day and you want to rock that cute little racerback tank that you just purchased last week. While trying it on in the mirror, you realize that your bra straps are showing and you don't have a strapless bra!
Strap PerfectInexpensive & Quick Fix: Try Strap Perfect ($10). This handy "As Seen on TV" product is the perfect solution. Each package comes with 6 straps. Just hook your bra strap into the plastic strap and voilá, your bra straps are carefully hidden!

Bridesmaids Dresses We Don't Hate

0

Filed under:

After all the royal wedding hype, "Bridesmaids", with every moment of its characters' raucous behavior, will be a welcome break from all that fancy English etiquette. We totally can't wait to see it. It looks hilarious! But between making movie plans and figuring out how to smuggle in some peanut M&Ms, we started reminiscing about some of the god-awful bridesmaid dresses we've been forced to buy. It's been a frightening trip down memory lane, but we know we're not alone.

There are countless women across the country whose closets have been turned into graveyards for the pastel bridesmaid dresses they never, ever want to see again. Floor-length chiffon gowns, raspberry pink cocktail frocks with black velvet sashes, and strapless horrors that pinch in all the wrong places are hung like mummified relics, never, under any circumstances, to be resurrected.

So we say, enough is enough. Out with the awful and in with the awesome.

We're not sure when jelly bean hues became customary, but the dresses we've found are decidedly not pastel yellow or cotton candy pink. In fact, they're not bridesmaid dresses at all. Imagine that! We're not defined by categories, and neither is our fashion. So what if they're not technically made for standing next to a bride at the altar? Who cares. We think these five frocks would be great for bridesmaids, and great for, well, everything else. Date night? Check. After-work drinks? Check. Lunch with the bridezilla? Check, please.

We'd proudly hang these dresses in the front our closets. Would you?

Fringe Necklaces

0

It's one of the most prominent symbols of boho-chic fashion, but fringe also exudes a certain glamour - at least this spring, on the vast selection of glamorous necklaces punctuated by layers of mesmerizing fringe. Not into hippie-inspired looks? No problem. The newest breed of fringe necklaces proves that these striking statement pieces can be worn even with an evening LBD. Here, some we love:

As if to prove fringe's tenacity in the dressy department, this Fragments necklace ($84) shows it in an entirely different - and sparkling - light. Composed of multi-sized strands of rhinestones and chains, it's the perfect complement to the aforementioned LBD or any night-out ensemble that demands a little extra glint.

We can't resist the eye-catching multicolor palette of this Juicy Couture Laurel Canyon necklace ($72.90). The tie-dye effect is impossibly cool and so unexpected, and a little hint of blue adds just the right splash of color to any warm weather look.

Stay true to those boho roots with a necklace that really captures the spirit of the look. This Lucky Brand Havana necklace ($69) features leather fringe topped by little wooden beads for a scene-stealing look.

If your ensemble is lacking that extra pop to liven it up, try this Leslie Danzis fringe necklace ($98). As if the lean chains dripping down weren't enough, it's tangled with strong bursts of fuchsia for a bold effect.

In the Textured Details

They say the devil is in the details, and that couldn't be truer this season, when impossibly rich textures and unexpected embellishments add sumptuous texture to everyday basics.

Essentially, this means your bland T-shirts and ho-hum summer dresses (cute, but not exactly attention-grabbing) take on a whole new persona, thanks to tactile elements like crochet, rope, fringe, lace and embroidery. Here, a few textured pieces we love:

To call this adorable would be an understatement! Free People's Shifty Shifty dress ($168) is a lesson in laid-back summer comfort. The sleeves and neckline are completely crocheted, while the front is decorated with graceful embroidery. Try it with a pair of metallic flat sandals for the ultimate in low-key chic.

This Patterson J. Kincaid Mya tank ($98) will do the trick if you're trying to channel your inner hippie in time for all of those summer music fests. Brazenly trimmed with little fringed tassels, it makes the simple white tank just complex enough to turn heads.

Rope doesn't exactly call to mind visions of romance and elegance, but this Oscar the Third Amelia dress ($179) begs to differ. Stunningly accentuated by draped ruffles and finished with sturdy rope trim at the neckline, this pretty dress is perfect for a balmy evening rooftop fete.

A hint of lace updates the Lucky Brand Ashley skirt ($49.99), a fresh, goes-with-everything piece that you'll wear all summer long. With its lightweight chambray material and easy drawstring waist, it's sure to be a favorite for its comfort alone.

Five Great Swimsuits that Won't Break the Bank

0
0

Filed under:

Weighing the pros and cons of swimsuits is like picking the petals off of a flower one by one: we love the suit, we hate the price, we love the color, we hate how it makes our back side look....

Believe it or not, there are suits out there that you can love everything about. In fact, we found five of them. Prepare to fall head over heels for the suit, the price, and how gorgeous you'll look in it.

1. Lepel Verona Moulded Swimsuit, $52.50, Figleaves

We think of this Lepel creation as a super suit, and not just because it does kind of remind of us of our favorite comic book heroine. It lifts the bust, cinches the waist, keeps the booty in check and happens to come in a color you'll look gorgeous in before and after you get a tan.

2. Daisy Push-Up Triangle Top and Matching Bottoms, $24 and $16, Victoria's Secret

If you have a petite frame, this is the perfect bikini for you. It's just as tiny as you are! The push-up top will help make you appear a little less tiny in certain places, while the string bottoms show off your slim frame.

3. Black Crotchet Bikini, $55, Topshop

Small on top but not-so-small on the bottom? We've got you covered. Boyshort bottoms hold your bottom half together, but can look too sporty for a fashionista's taste, which is why we love this crotchet suit. It's dainty and feminine while still serving it's purpose.

4. Underwire Halter Bikini Top and Reversible String Bikini Bottom, $17.94 each, Express

For ladies with the opposite concern, this Express bikini holds your girls together while still letting you show off the rest of your awesome figure. Another plus to this sweet suit? The bottom is reversible!

5. Contrast Tipping Halter Tankini and Bikini Brief, $32.27 and $21.52, Asos

Top:

Bottom:

We love the plunging neckline and on-trend hue of this Asos number, which is why we think it's the perfect plus-size suit. A nautical flare and curve-hugging design make this suit both adorable and super sexy.

Lighten Up in White Separates

0

Everyone knows this is the season of the Little White Dress (we'll see you in the fall, LBD), but other white pieces deserve their share of the sunlight, too. From airy tops to lightweight skirts, white separates look and feel all the more incredible as temperatures soar. You can count on looking hot - and feeling cool - in these great whites:

A flirty little flip lends this Nic + Zoe Tiered & True skirt ($108) plenty of charm. So, too, do the discreet ruffles and slight A-line cut, a little detail that makes it fun and quite versatile. Pair it with a colorful tank and metallic sandals for an effortless summer look.

What a breath of fresh air! This White House Black Market eyelet top ($78) just exudes luxe glamour - what you might see as you stroll the cobbled streets of Capri or the beaches of Saint Tropez. Pull your hair back and slip on some statement earrings for max impact.

Two words practically synonymous with summer: "linen" and "white." Combine the two and you clearly have a winner. These Allen Allen linen pants ($59) are a genius choice: affordable, comfy with a drawstring waist and great for going from beach to boardwalk in style. (Opt for skin-toned undergarments - never white, which will show through.)

Five Sandals Every Woman Should Own

0
0

Filed under:

As if you needed another excuse to splurge on more than one pair of sandals this summer, we've put together the five pairs you shouldn't go without. Yes, you have our permission to go on a shopping spree, but remember, this list includes five particular sandals, not twenty frivolous ones (we're talking to you, flip flop addicts).

1. The dressed-up flat

Summer is all about taking it easy. A pair of embellished flat sandals can complete your night-out look just as well as those angry-looking stilettos.

Beaded Jewel-Front Sandal, $29, Arden B

2. The day or night wedge

Find the right pair of wedges and you'll soon discover that they go with nearly every outfit in your summer wardrobe.

Michael Antonio Gower Wedges, $69, Piperlime

3. The versatile flip flop

You know, it's that pair that sits by the door all season long just because you wear them so often that it doesn't make sense to bother putting them back in the closet.

Vineyard Leather FlipFlops, $34.99, JCrew

4. The sandals you really can't wear with much

But look how much fun they are! Dressing for this season is all about showing off your playful side. As long as you don't spend too much money, we totally condone a pair of colorful, not-so-versatile sandals

HESTA Pink Tie Up Espadrille Sandals, $50, Topshop

5. The sexy sandal
Because every once in a while, you're going to want to give off the "wow" effect. And when that happens, you're going to want a "wow" shoe.

Gianni Bini "Jagger" Sandals, $60, Dillard's

How to Wear Maxi Skirts

0
0

Is it a staple? A passing trend? Whatever you think of the maxi skirt, one thing is certain: it's certainly made quite an impact this year. It may take some convincing for the short-skirted among us to even consider the idea of wearing such a longer hemline, but consider these tips and you may be able to make it work:

Create balance. Without it, you'll be lost in a sea of fabric from neck to ankle - one of the biggest fashion no-nos we can fathom. Paired with a fitted T-shirt, this Stem maxi skirt ($68) is just right for everyday wear. It's made from stretchy, ultra-soft microfiber for an effortless fit, and the fold-over waistband is another bonus; you can use it to comfortably adjust the length of the skirt, which is helpful if you're on the short side.

Keep it fresh. Long lengths are typically associated with highly dramatic looks, but summer's cool, laid-back color palettes set the right tone for a much more casual feel. This CALYSPO St. Barth for Target maxi skirt ($34.99) is dip-dyed in a range of breezy hues for a playful take on the longer hem.

Make it sexy. There's nothing dowdy about the BB Dakota Hutchinson maxi skirt ($55), which admittedly takes some moxie to pull off thanks to its thigh-high slit. Pair it with an electric colored top for a bold evening look that is at once summery, dressy and exceptionally comfortable.

With Memorial Day weekend on the horizon, now is a great time to invest in a couple of beachy, carefree tunics to kick start the unofficial beginning of summer. Whether you're headed to the beach for a few days or just lounging at the country club or pool, you'll find plenty of reasons to slip into these cool and colorful toppers:

Fans of fresh color adorn this vibrant Luli Fama Copa Cabana tunic ($96). Loose and comfy, it features a sleek drawstring at the bust that lends it a flattering shape. Throw it on over your bikini or with jeans for a summer-fresh look.

Despite the general preference for light hues during spring and summer, navy is always a smart choice for its nautical feel. If you're a fan and want to go a bit neutral, try this Splendid Abigail tunic ($97), a polished style with a modern dropped waist.

It may actually be impossible to frown when you wear something as gorgeous as this Trina Turk French Riviera tunic ($137). The perfect investment piece to see you through years of luxurious vacations and relaxing weekends, it's brilliant in pink paisley.

North Face Gear for Outdoor Fun And Weather Protection

Filed under:

women's north face rain jacketI've owned a lot of North Face clothing; I use it for camping, hiking, and riding ATV's in Utah. Never failed me -- it's lightweight, tough, comfortable to wear, and resists the elements like nobody's business.

Rain gear is a North Face specialty -- this Women's Erin Rain Coat sports a breathable HyVent Shell for top-notch air and moisture exchange and total waterproof wear in the heaviest rain. Flip the adjustable hood over your head and you'll be dry as a bone. Sealed seams keep the water from sneaking through the coat, as does the storm flap on the full length front zipper. A pair of zippered hand pockets keeps your valuables secure, and the 100% ripstop nylon coat is machine wash and dry. Nice.
north face women's venture rain jacket

If you have need of a shortie rain jacket for travel, or to stick in your backpack, check out this Women's North Face Venture Rain Jacket. Tough Hyvent DT fabric makes the jacket waterproof and breathable whether you're in the rain waiting for a taxi or out on the trail setting up camp for the night. North Face equipment won't let you down.

north face crestone men's hiking boots

I own a pair of these North Face Crestone GTX XCR Hiking Boots; they're perfect for day hiking and my backpacking trips. Lightweight and rugged, the boots feature a breathable upper membrane of GoreTex which keeps my feet cool and ventilated while I'm hoofing it through the rain and mud, and the high-traction Vibram outsole keeps me upright and stable while crossing the streams to my favorite camping site. When these North Face boots wear out, I'm getting another pair.

North Face clothing -- you won't find much better.

Bold Tote Bags

If not now, when? That's the question you should ask yourself the next time you're at the mall and find yourself faced with a veritable sea of rainbow-colored tote bags. In everything from electric pink to neon yellow, these outrageously colored bags are definitely the accessories of the moment.

Not comfortable carrying something so bold around on a regular basis? Grab one to liven up your ensemble after hours, make it a weekend go-to bag for the season or use it to punch up your vacation wardrobe. These are just a few bold tote bags we love:

Talk about functional! The Fossil Key-Per N/S tote ($98) is the kind of fun-meets-useful bag busy women fantasize about. It's ideal for anyone, but moms will appreciate the easy-wipe nylon construction and multiple pockets (including an exterior zip pouch).

Beautiful floral artwork adorns this softly vibrant Ted Baker Anemone Flower Ikon tote ($60), a glossy carryall that depicts the season's brightest blooms to perfection. The epitome of the stylish shopper, this fun bag is sure to be a favorite through summer.

Daycation...all you ever wanted? After seeing this Kate Spade Daycation Bon canvas shopper ($145), no doubt you'll be singing its praises from the rooftops. With its wildly colorful fauna print and spacious design, it's built to perform in style.

A splash of turquoise is one of the most appropriate bursts of color for the season, so this Marc by Marc Jacobs Hayley tote ($398) is a no brainer. It's definitely an investment piece, but it's also one of the few straw bags you'll actually look forward to carrying for years!

If you're looking for a more versatile bag that you can wear with a sun dress, jeans and everything in between, try this Mar y Sol Guadalupe shopper ($88). This affordable mini tote is a great alternative to an everyday handbag.

Floral Dresses to Match Your Vibe

Filed under:

No matter what the year, floral dresses are always in season come Spring and Summer. This year is no exception. Browse on Nordstrom and you'll currently have over 200 different floral frocks to choose from. I love the variety in the cuts of the dresses, the lengths, the and the colors. You'll also notice differences in the sizes and the designs of the flowers, both of which can effect the look of the dress and in turn, the image you portray. I explain more below.

If you want a sweet, feminine or dainty look, smaller-sized floral prints like those on the dresses below are what you should search for. They give off a charming, endearing impression. These are also the floral prints we're more used to seeing.

Maybe you don't like looking too girlie or aren't fond of the smaller floral prints. Abstract floral dresses like these below have become quite popular and are a good option for you. The dresses feel modern, less traditional and more eclectic. The flowers look as if they're painted on the dresses and their shape is more abstract.

From left to right: 1. Diane Von Furstenberg 'Alyssa' Dress ($385) 2. ECI Floral Print Chiffon Dress (Was, $148, Now $87.90) 3. Elle Floral Chiffon Empire Dress (Was $60, Now $45) 4. Vila Floral Maxi Dress from ASOS (Was $83.09, Now $51.70) 5. Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Belted Stretch Cotton Sheath Dress ($138)

I personally love both looks, the sweet and dainty dresses and the more eclectic dresses. What you'll go for is really up your mood and style. Do you gravitate towards one more than the other? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below!

Decorative Flat Sandals

Wedges are everywhere, and platform heels aren't going anywhere anytime soon. If you can't walk on heels, though, you may find yourself on the hunt for something just as glamorous, sexy and fun to wear - on a flat sole.

This season, the decorate flat sandal adds sparkle, elegance and verve to your favorite maxi dresses, sun dresses and tanks/capris ensembles. Here, some we love:

The gladiator has gone glam! This Vince Camuto Martinique sandal ($97.95) offers everything we seek in a shoe: a stylish design that is at once timeless and fresh and a great price, too. With its rhinestoned upper, Martinique subtly stands out and brings just a touch of dazzle to your hottest ensembles. (We love the flash of coral, too!)

You can't go wrong with a classic, especially when it comes from Sam Edelman. The label's Gigi sandals ($59.95) are longtime favorites that feature sinewy straps in a range of fresh shades. We especially love the subtle gold snake embossment on these ones; it's just right for a look that's strong without being overpowering.

Much like a favorite LBD or reliable sexy heels, a great pair of flats can really amplify your warm weather wardrobe in an instant. These Kate Spade Frankie sandals ($325) exude a classy, sophisticated vibe that comes through in their sleek satin material and dazzling stone embellishments.

Of course, you don't have to sacrifice your savings if you aren't quite sure a sparkly flat sandal is right for you. Try these Naughty Monkey Dainty sandals ($49.95), which feature a striking, seed-beaded bow atop sleek silver or black straps. A shoe like this dresses up a simple denim skirt and T-shirt beautifully.

Few embellishments look more classic than pearls, whether they appear on a necklace or, in this case, on a cute shoe. These REPORT Talia sandals ($69.96) make clever use of the minimal detail by dotting them over simple T-straps and finishing the entire look with a dainty little bow. It's youthful in a fresh, fun way.

If you only embrace one detail this summer, let it be color. No matter what brilliant hue you favor, you'll feel so much brighter and seasonal simply by adding it to your look. A flash of fuchsia, as seen on these Nelly Venturi beaded sandals ($85.90), all but guarantees to put a spring in your step - if not for its beauty, then for the jaunty little bead cluster atop the vamp. Beautiful!
